The longer a SARS problem is ignored, the more complicated and potentially expensive it may become. The clean-up can be approached in clear, manageable stages.
What needs to be fixed?

What is sitting unresolved with SARS?

Every clean-up starts by separating the problem into tax types, periods, records and SARS actions. That turns a vague worry into a practical work plan.

02VAT

VAT201 backlogs

Outstanding VAT returns, incomplete reconciliations, missing invoices or differences between the accounting records and declarations.

03PAYROLL

PAYE and employer returns

Outstanding EMP201 declarations, EMP501 reconciliations, payroll differences or IRP5 information that needs to be aligned.

04PENALTIES

Administrative penalties

Penalty notices, recurring administrative penalties, interest or amounts that need to be checked against the underlying non-compliance.

05CORRESPONDENCE

SARS letters and requests

Verification requests, audit correspondence, final demands, supporting-document requests or notices that need an organised response.

06RECORDS

Missing or incomplete records

Bank statements, bookkeeping, payroll reports, VAT evidence, financial statements or historic records that need to be reconstructed.

Why waiting can make it worse

Silence does not make the SARS account stand still.

Delay does not automatically mean disaster, but it can reduce your options and make the evidence harder to assemble. The sensible first move is to measure the position.

SARS: Manage Your Tax Compliance Status
Certain administrative penalties may recur while non-compliance remains unresolved.
Interest may continue on unpaid amounts.
Outstanding returns can affect Tax Compliance Status.
Tax debt may progress to collection procedures.
Missing records usually become harder to reconstruct as time passes.
A problem should first be measured before promises are made.
First goalEstablish exactly what is outstanding—not guess the final cost.

The clean-up process

A practical route from backlog to a clear position.

Not every client needs every phase. We identify the relevant stages, agree the scope and work through them in the right order.

01

Confidential diagnostic

We identify the taxpayer, entities, relevant tax types, outstanding periods, penalties, debt, SARS correspondence and available accounting records.

02

Compliance map and scope

We set out what appears outstanding, what information is missing, the proposed work phases and likely professional fees. The position may change as records and SARS accounts are reviewed.

03

Rebuild the records

Where needed, we reconstruct bookkeeping, reconcile bank accounts, payroll, VAT and supporting schedules, and identify questions requiring your input.

04

Prepare and submit

We prepare the applicable returns and calculations. You review and approve submissions before filing where required.

05

Penalties, debt and future compliance

Once the underlying returns and figures are addressed, we assess appropriate next steps where the facts support them.

What to provide

Start with what you have. We will identify the gaps.

Not every client will need every item. The diagnostic will produce a tailored records-request list for your entities and tax types.

Do not wait for a “perfect file”.A clear list of missing records is part of the clean-up.

Penalties, tax debt and the right SARS channel.

These are separate decisions. None should be promised before the facts and legal requirements are understood.

Penalties

Can SARS penalties be remitted?

A Request for Remission may be considered where the relevant legal requirements and facts support it. We can review the penalty, corrective action, reasons and evidence. Submission does not guarantee approval.

Tax debt

What if the debt cannot be paid immediately?

SARS may consider deferment or instalments subject to qualifying requirements, supporting information and approval. Returns generally need attention first, and interest may continue on unpaid debt.

  • Reconcile the SARS balance
  • Prepare cash-flow support
  • Compile a realistic proposal

VDP

Is a VDP application always necessary?

No. VDP is not automatically correct for every outstanding return or penalty. It has specific legal requirements and should be assessed separately where there may be an undisclosed tax default.

What you receive

Clarity, evidence and a prioritised next step.

The aim is a defensible understanding of the position—not a quick promise of a compliant TCS PIN.
