Smarter Accounting is a compact, senior team focused on one thing: keeping your accounting, payroll and tax quietly under control so you can focus on running your business. We work mainly with owner-managed businesses that want reliable numbers, clear reporting and practical advice – without having to build an entire finance department.
David provides strategic oversight and high-level review, Nicole is the main person you work with day to day on bookkeeping, payroll and CIPC/UIF compliance, and Michelle keeps the accounting and tax side fully aligned with SARS. When advanced consultation is required, we bring in trusted specialists – but your relationship stays with one joined‑up team.

David Hartley
David Hartley is a Professional Accountant (SA) and the founder of Smarter Accounting. He specialises in helping small and growing businesses stabilise their accounting, tax and cash flow, with a strong focus on practical reporting and working directly with business owners.
David has deep experience in Xero, Sage Business Cloud Accounting (Sage One), Sage Pastel (Partner and Xpress) and related cloud systems. He also leads the use of AI tools in the practice, using them to streamline bookkeeping, management reporting and SARS compliance so clients always know where they stand.

Nicole Medeiros
Nicole Medeiros is the main day‑to‑day contact for many of our clients. She specialises in CIPC and UIF compliance, hands‑on bookkeeping and payroll using SimplePay, and keeps the wheels turning smoothly behind the scenes.
Nicole works confidently in Xero, Sage Business Cloud Accounting (Sage One) and Sage Pastel (Partner and Xpress). On the payroll side, SimplePay is her primary platform, helping clients keep PAYE, UIF and payroll reporting accurate, compliant and up to date.

Michelle Roebert
Michelle Roebert is an accountant, bookkeeper and tax practitioner with experience in Sage Business Cloud Accounting and SimplePay. She focuses on accurate bookkeeping, monthly accounts and tax compliance so clients always have reliable numbers for decision‑making.
Michelle enjoys working with small and growing businesses, managing day‑to‑day accounting, statutory returns and SARS queries in a calm, organised way. She works closely with David and Nicole to ensure that what happens in the books lines up with what happens at SARS.
